Best Reduction of the Company’s Carbon Footprint
The employees at the Timken Co. in Canton do what they can to reduce, reuse and recycle. The company cut energy consumption by installing energy-efficient lighting in all of its facilities and reducing electricity use in steel production, among other practices. The company saves enough energy each year to power 150,000 households. It also discontinued use of ozone-depleting chemicals.
Timken also uses 100 percent recycled steel. “We recycle more than we use,” says Lorrie Crum, communications consultant at Timken. “We are one of the largest steel recyclers in the world.”
One-third of the company’s 25,175 employees are trained in environmental health and safety programs. The efforts have decreased electricity output and emissions, saved 1.75 million tons of recycled materials, such as 575,500 tons of melted scrap metal last year and 8 billion gallons of wastewater.
