Fruit Roll-up

Grocery stores hate overripe bananas too. So Dole Foods has partnered with Cleveland’s Healthy Foods for a solution.

“When bananas get ripe and turn brown, it becomes shrink for retailers,” says Winston Breeden, CEO of Healthy Foods.

The two companies are cross-promoting Yonanas, Healthy Foods’ line of home food processors that transform peeled, chilled bananas into a treat resembling soft-serve ice cream.

“We featured Yonanas in a trade show,” says Dole vice president of marketing Marty Ordman. “Our chairman David Murdoch thought it was a great idea and decided to invest.”

Dole acquired 30 percent of Healthy Foods, and the partners will create co-branded produce stickers and Yonanas machines, and will incorporate the Yonanas brand into packaging for Dole’s growing line of frozen fruits.

Dole’s sales in more than 90 countries will benefit Healthy Foods as well. “For us to be able to scale up and feed the market in all those countries is huge,” says Breeden.
