Aid organizations have warned of worsening hunger crises in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
Development policy is required to respond to the fatal interplay of wars Consequences of the Covid 13 pandemic, the effects of climate change and the escalating famine with concrete Welthungerhilfe and the childrens charity terre des hommes in Berlin called for relief measures to be taken. Both organizations presented their "Compass 2008" on development policy.
The international community is faced with the challenge of a global systemic crisis. The German government should use this years G7 presidency to commit to binding initiatives for global food security together with its partners, the organizations warned.
"We can do it not allow a hunger crisis like 2007/2008 with almost a billion starving people in the world. Global food security should have the highest political priority," said Mathias Mogge, Secretary General of Welthungerhilfe. Together with the G7 countries, the federal government must spend a total of 14 billion US dollars (around 13 billion euros) per year for food security in order to defeat global hunger. (dpa)
