San-Francisco-based medical device and digital health start-up, Element Science has recently announced saving the life of the first patient with successful defibrillation early in the enrollment of the IDE (Investigational Device Exception) Study of its Jewel P-WCD (Patch Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillator).
For the unversed, the Jewel P-WCD is a wearable defibrillator device developed to identify arrhythmias in patients with a high-level temporary risk for SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest).
As per reports, this condition impacts more than 500,000 patients in the US yearly.
First-hand evidence of the Jewel P-WCD’s benefit was demonstrated by a patient enrolled in the study who suffered from SCA at home due to a life-threatening arrhythmia, which was both detected and treated by the device.
The patient underwent a life-threatening arrhythmia in the first weeks just after returning home to a rural area where incident/emergency response teams are not instantly available.
The Jewel P-WCD device aided the patient in saving life and reestablishing a normal rhythm successfully with one defibrillation shock wave, providing enough time for the first responders to arrive.
Following this, the patient was shifted to the hospital for further treatment, received an automated implantable cardioverter defibrillator, and is recovering well.
Commenting on the move, Uday N. Kumar, MD, Founder, CEO & President of Element Science stated that their firm aligns with its vision of redefining the care approach as patients return home after being cured of significant cardiovascular events, including heart attacks or heart failure diagnosis.
The Element Science team is glad to have been able to help save the life of this patient. This continuous protection offered by the Jewel P-WCD that helps this patient while wearing the device when required is the case for which the device has been created.
Kumar further expressed the firm’s excitement about collaborating with the leading physicians across the country to conduct this study, and the first patient save which signifies the benefits this technology offers.
